Lodging Recommendations

Please let us know if you are looking for accommodations or need any help figuring out where to stay. There are a number of hotels, inns and Airbnbs in the area, both on the mainland and the islands. Here are our recommendations:

(Note: Some AirBnB listings are farther from the wedding venue than others—and a couple are only accessible by ferry!—so just make sure to map them out relative to Bailey Island before booking.)

Weekend Schedule

The rundown.

We know many of you are coming from out of town, and we want to make sure you enjoy your stay in Maine! We’ve planned a few events during the wedding weekend (besides The Event, that is), which we hope you’ll be able to attend.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 27

Rehearsal Dinner
All guests are welcome to join us for dinner the night before the wedding for lobster rolls, fried clams, blueberry cake, and other Downeast delicacies.

Cook’s Lobster & Ale House

68 Garrison Cove Road
Bailey Island, ME 04003
6 - 9 p.m.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 28

Wedding!
The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. down by the water at Mackerel Cove on Bailey Island. After we say “I do,” we’ll all walk up the hill to the Bailey Island Library for cocktails, followed by dinner.

Bailey Island Library Hall

2167 Harpswell Islands Road
Bailey Island, ME 04003
5 - 11 p.m.

How to get there:

There will be a fourteen-person shuttle leaving the Brunswick Hotel at 4:15 p.m. to bring people to the wedding on Bailey Island. If you would like to take advantage of the shuttle service to and from the wedding, please just let us know on your RSVP so we can make sure there are enough vans to accommodate everyone. The shuttle will make a few trips bringing people back to the hotel starting at 9 p.m. and ending at 11 p.m.

If you prefer to take your own car, you can drive directly to the ceremony site from the mainland (no ferry needed). There will be parking on the north side of the library; when you turn onto Library Hall Lane there will be the spots designated in the field to your left.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 29

Late Breakfast
Sleep in and stop by for a post-party brunch.

The Brunswick Hotel
4 Noble Street
Brunswick, ME 04011

10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

A note on plague-time wedding planning…

It’s been a really difficult year, but we are hopeful that by the end of August it will be safe for us to gather and celebrate together. All adults in the U.S. now have the opportunity to be fully inoculated against COVID-19, and we ask that if you’re able to get the vaccine, please, please do. To be extra safe, we have decided to keep the attendee list under the fifty-person cap originally recommended by the Maine Department of Health, and—weather permitting—the wedding will be held en plein air. We will also have masks and sanitizer on hand for those who want to use them.

Anyone coming from elsewhere in New England will be exempted from Maine’s testing and quarantine requirements. If you have been fully vaccinated, regardless of your state of origin, you are allowed entry without having to get a COVID test or undergo quarantine.

For those traveling from out of the country, you will need to present a negative COVID-19 test taken within three days of departure. According to Maine’s current requirements, you’ll need to quarantine for seven days and receive a negative COVID test three to five days after your arrival.

We will be keeping a close eye on local and CDC guidelines, and we’ll keep you posted should anything change. Can’t wait to see you!

Stuff to Do & Sites to See

Hiking / Walking

For a short Saturday morning hike, the Giant’s Stairs on Bailey Island is a lovely option:

For dramatic coastal scenery in Harpswell, nothing beats the Giant’s Stairs. Named for its interesting geologic history, the Giant’s Stairs trail follows the rocky coastline with gorgeous views of eastern Casco Bay, often with crashing waves glinting in the sunlight. On any given day you might see rafts of ducks, foraging harbor seals or a lobster boat hauling traps below your feet.

Other trails nearby:
Devil’s Back Trail
Skolfield Shores Preserve
Long Reach Preserve

If you’re extending your stay, Acadia National Park (three hours northeast) is a natural wonderland and a literal national treasure.

Coffee, Food & Treats Nearby

Island Candy Company | Orr’s Island
Old-fashioned candy shop
with fudge, brittle, and ice cream

Salt Cod Cafe | Orr’s Island
Local breakfast and lunch spot on the water

Frosty’s Donuts | Brunswick
Quaint New England donut shop

Dog Bar Jim | Brunswick
Good coffee, fresh baked goods

Maine Beer Company | Freeport
Brewery with nice beers and pizza

Sailing / Boat Tours

Check out Tevake Sailing Charters—they can take you out to sea (and back!) and give you a deluxe tour of Downeast Maine’s many lighthouses.

Sea Kayaking / Canoeing

There are plenty of ways to enjoy Maine’s aquatic life besides going to a lobster shack. In late August, the water is what Mainers would call “warm” (a toasty 65 degrees). To rent kayaks or canoes, you can contact H2Outfitters, right on Bailey Island.

L.L. Bean Flagship Store

The mecca. Open 24 hours, 365 days a year, and located just 40 minutes south of Bailey Island. Come for the discounted boat totes, stay for the trout pond.

Portland

Maine’s largest city is a great place to visit if you’re planning on sticking around for an extra day or two, and it’s less than an hour from Bailey Island. We recommend going down to the waterfront district to explore the shops and Portland’s many excellent restaurants and breweries:

Eventide Oyster Co.
Fore Street
Duckfat
Liquid Riot Bottling Co.
Honey Paw
Oxbow Blending & Bottling
Holy Donut (potato donuts!)

Art & Museums

The Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockford is about an hour and a half up the coast, so it’s a schlep, but it has a very fine American art collection and is well worth the day trip.

The Portland Museum of Art has a number of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works on view, but it is best known for its collection of portraits and seascapes by Winslow Homer, whose painting studio was in nearby Scarsborough.
